QUESTIONS KATELYN IS FREQUENTLY ASKED...

Why should I hire a personal stylist?
Whether you’re tweaking your look or overhauling your whole wardrobe, it’s a big job and requires a lot of time and energy. To make sure you get it right, it’s best to bring in an expert who can advise you on fit, color, proportion and style. It also makes the process way less stressful and a lot more fun!

What kind of people do you work with?
I work with awesome women with regular jobs and normal lives. They’re wives, mothers, single, on the career fast track, business owners, empty nesters… women just like you.

Why don’t you work with men?
Honestly, it’s more complicated and less fun (wayyy fewer fashion options!) for me to work with men.

What is your styling specialty? What sets you apart from the rest of the personal stylists out there?
I think of myself as the “every woman’s stylist” - I bring the celebrity-type experience of having a personal stylist to women everywhere. I also work with budgets of all sizes - you aren’t required to buy designer clothes to work with me!

Why is personal style and appearance important?
Personal style is important because what you wear tells the world who you are. When your clothes fit properly and enhance your body shape and natural coloring, you send the message that you care about yourself and what you do.

How does style and appearance effect someone personally and professionally?
It feeds into every area of your life. You feel more confident and you look more competent. You’re likely to be more social because you feel good about the way you look when you go out. You never know what good thing will happen when you’re dressed for it!

Where do you recommend people shop?
The stores I recommend vary greatly based on the client’s personal style and their budget. That being said, there are a few places that always seem to serve up great options no matter what your style is: Nordstrom, J.Crew, and Levi’s.

Where are your favorite places to shop?
I love thrift shopping! The treasure hunt is so exciting - you never know what you'll find! But my dream shopping destination is Net-A-Porter - so many gorgeous designer pieces all in one place!

How would you describe your style?
Joyful with a daring flair and a 1960s twist!

If I work with you, will you dress me in your style?
Not at all! My goal is to help you discover and express your personal style.

Who are your style icons?
There are so many incredible women who inspire me with their unique take on fashion: Zooey Deschanel, Emma Stone, Katy Perry, Duffy, Gwen Stefani, Kate Moss, Audrey Hepburn, Diane Kruger, Edie Sedgwick, Sienna Miller, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Bridget Bardot, Twiggy, Miroslava Duma and Alexa Chung are some of my favorite fashion icons!

Do you offer color analysis? What kind of color system do you use?
I sure do! Color Analysis is included in my Fashion Consultation service, and can also be added on to any other styling service. I use a fantastic color analysis system created by The Style Core. The swatches look similar to paint chips, with each color made of fabric and the swatch made of flexible plastic. Each swatch features four—six colors and every client receives a total of ten swatches. I’m a big fan of this system because it allows me to create personalized swatch sets for each of my clients.

When did you know you wanted to be a stylist?
I found out about styling as a career option when I was twelve years old. I was looking through a CD’s liner notes and discovered that the band had a wardrobe stylist who dressed them. I was so excited to find out that I could have a career that involved two of my favorite things: fashion and music. It was one of those lightbulb moments - I knew right then and there that was exactly what I wanted to do!

How did you become a stylist?
Growing up, I was determined to give myself the best possible foundation for a successful styling career, so I took classes in anything that could further my knowledge about fashion and styling, including a fashion illustration class and photography classes. For two consecutive years, I was one of five hundred people selected to take part in Teen Vogue Fashion University, where I attended classes and lectures in Fashion Design, Make-Up, Visual Merchandising, Costume Design, Fashion Blogging and Social Networking. Shortly after, I was thrilled to take classes with the School Of Style, receiving an education specifically in fashion, wardrobe and personal styling. I then decided to further my personal styling education by studying with The Style Core, where I became a certified consultant. After I finished my final class with The Style Core, I took about a year to build my business - writing the consultation materials, having the website designed, and compiling my marketing information. Katelyn Milley, Personal Stylist was launched on May 14th, 2013.

My dream is to do what you do! How can I become a personal stylist?
I’d be happy to give you some advice for breaking into the styling business. Before you begin your styling career, I highly recommend taking classes with School Of Style and The Style Core. They don't require a long term commitment or a ton of money, but provide invaluable information for breaking into the styling world and how to work when you actually begin your styling career.

To be sure of the right styling career path for you, some questions to ask yourself would be:
• Am I very organized? Any form of styling requires a GREAT amount of organization.
• Do I have enough self discipline to go after work for myself? If not, it would be great for you to work as a stylist for a company, or as an assistant stylist working alongside someone else.
• Do I thrive on working one on one with people, or in a team centered atmosphere? If you prefer the former, personal styling is a good match for you, if you prefer the latter, it would work well for you to work as a fashion or wardrobe stylist for a company, or as an assistant stylist.
• Who do I want to work with? Celebrities? Musicians? Actors? Designers? Regular people? This will determine the type of styling you want to get into.

Do you take on interns?
At this time I do not work with interns.
